5 Tips and Tricks to Stay Ahead of the Competition (How to)

In the game of basketball, it is always important to find a way to stay ahead of your competition and do things that may not be willing to do. In this article I am going to take you through the five tips and tricks I find most effective to stay ahead of other players. Those things include always having a workout plan, treat your workouts like they are doctors appointments, quality is more important than quantity, always workout at game speed, and improve conditioning. These five tips can help you to get a leg up on your competition and help you succeed during games.

The first tip I want to discuss is always having a workout plan. Having a workout plan every time you go to the gym is essential because you do not want to show up not knowing what you need to work on. If you come to the gym knowing what you need to work on, it will allow you to follow that plan and help you get better at your craft. Without a plan, you may just sit around and be lazy or just randomly shoot, but by having a plan and having something written down, you are more likely to follow that and do those things when you get to the gym. Plans will make your workouts efficient and you will know exactly what needs to be done when you get to the gym. Having a plan always helped me when going to workout. I am not someone who wanted to stay in the gym for hours on end. I wanted quick efficient workouts that can help me get better, but not make me stay in the gym for three to four hours at a time.

The next tip that I feel is very important is treating your workouts similar to a doctors appointment. What I mean by this if before your week starts, sit down with yourself and figure out when you are going to be able to go to the gym. Write these dates down and hold yourself accountable to go to workout. You are far more likely to go workout if you have it written down and that way you can plan these workouts around different things you have going on throughout your week. I began writing down the dates I was going to workout starting in high school and by doing that I was much more consistent when going to workout. I still had plenty of time to hangout with my friends and do other things before or after my workouts. If I did not write down when I would go workout and something came up, there was a good chance I would not end up going to workout.

The third tip and trick of mine is that the quality of the workout is more important than the quantity. This links back to having a plan when going to workout. Figure out what you need to work on and go do it. Don't spend three to four hours in the gym doing random things. Figure out an hour or so workout you can do, get it done, and take care of your body. It is important to keep your body fresh when you have games to play, so by keeping your workouts short and efficient it allows your body to rest and be prepared to play when the time comes. Like I said earlier, I was not one to stay in the gym day and night. I liked to keep my workouts short and work on my weaknesses.

Another tip of mine to stay ahead of your competition is making sure you are working out at game speed. This is probably the most important tip of mine. I say this because if you are not working out at game speed and the time comes to use those moves in a game, you will not be ready because the game will be moving by too fast for you. If you do these workouts at game speed and push yourself, then you will enter the game and see your moves work because that is the way you have been practicing. It is okay to mess up during your workouts as long as you are pushing yourself. If you are not messing up then you are not getting any better. I used to get so frustrated at myself when I would mess up moves during my workouts because there would be nobody guarding me. I had to continue to remind myself that it takes time to perfect these moves and that I will see the results come my way.

The final tip of mine is to work on your conditioning. Being the most conditioned player on the court is a huge positive. Having the ability to not get tired while playing allows you to stay in the game longer and when you are going against someone who is tired, you will have the upper hand as they will not be able to guard you. I always felt I was one of the most conditioned players during my playing days. I would rarely get tired out on the court and that allowed me to be so successful when I was out there on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. I would run a couple extra sprints or an extra mile on my own and that allowed me to have that extra conditioning for myself.

Getting an upper hand on the basketball court in any way you can is something every player is looking to do. Having a workout plan allows you to come to the gym knowing exactly what you need to work on and keeps you focused. Treating your workouts like doctors appointments makes you hold yourself accountable in getting to the gym each and every week. Having your workouts be more about quality than quantity which keeps your workouts compressed into an hour or so, but you work on everything you need to and keep your body fresh. Making sure you are working out at game speed keeps you ready for when you get into the games and you are doing those moves you have been practicing. Being the most conditioned player on the court allows you to stay in games and not get tired unlike your opponent. There are many ways you can look to get an upperhand, but these five are the ones I have found most successful.
